Past, Present, and Future:
Literacy Volunteers Valley Shore, CT, Inc. began operating in 1979 as a small group seeking to improve the literacy of the people in the Connecticut Valley Shore area when refugee Laotian and Vietnamese families immigrated to the area. The organization was incorporated, and became official on July 14, 1980. We were originally an affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of Connecticut, meeting at the Police Department building in Old Saybrook. In 1982 our name changed to Literacy Volunteers Valley Shore and we opened a "permanent" office in the Westbrook Library. |

On July 5, 1980, eighteen men and women completed our first tutor training program aimed at ESL. Since that time we have trained almost 700 tutors and have tutored over 1000 students. In 1987 Mary Ellen Jewett of Old Lyme became the Director, and a committee was formed to recruit and train volunteers to staff the office and provide support services to tutors and students. Recently, in 2010, Mary Ellen Jewett retired, opening the door for our current director, Michael Noto who continues to drive LVVS to grow.
Currently, Literacy Volunteers tutors over 100 students from over 38 different countries, and we receive frequent inquiries from potential students. We also have a list of students waiting for a tutor because the demand is ever-increasing, and our current volunteer base can only be stretched so far. LVVS is always looking for new tutors. As we look to the future, we hope to continue to grow as we have, and strive to continue our success of our mission.
