Literacy Volunteers Valley Shore, CT Inc. (LVVS) is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and equal

and clients. All employment and volunteer staff decisions will be made without regard to race, color,
religious creed, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, present or past

limited to blindness. This policy is applied to all employment actions, including, but not limited to:
- recruiting, hiring and promoting employees;
- recruiting volunteers;
- making other personnel decisions such as compensation and terms of employment.
Sexual harassment is illegal and prohibited by the Connecticut Discriminatory Employment Practices
Act (Connecticut General Statutes § 46a-60 (a) (18) and § 703 of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights
Act. Sexual harassment is defined as any unwelcome sexual advance, or request for sexual favors
or any conduct of a sexual nature when:
- submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual’s employment;
- submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the
basis for employment decisions affecting such individual or;
- such conduct has the purpose or effect of substantially interfering with an
individual’s work performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or
offensive working environment.
Harassment on the basis of race is a violation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. It is defined
as a racially motivated environment that creates an adverse effect on the employee’s ability to
perform the tasks required or that creates an unreasonable abusive or offensive work environment.
Each employee, volunteer, or client must recognize that sexual or racial harassment is unacceptable
conduct in the workplace, and will not be tolerated by LVVS. Any employee/volunteer/tutor/client who
believes that sexual harassment has occurred should report the alleged act to the Director or President
of the Board of Directors immediately. Prompt action will be taken to stop the harassment and prevent
its recurrence. Violation of this policy will not be permitted and may result in discipline up to and
including termination of paid employees or volunteer/tutor/client status.
