Students Name: Jaime Hidalgo Tutors Name: Esther Landis Time Tutored: 1 year, 6 Months Time in U.S.A.: 1 year, 9 Months Level: Level 2 (High Beginning) The first time that I went to buy food at Stop Shop I saw that the people had a card, so I asked a friend what that card does, he answered me that is a discounts card that I can get it with the woman at customer service. In the next week, I went and tried to get my discounts card, I thought it is not very difficult. But when I tried to talk the woman who gives the cards didn’t understand me. that was abig confusion because she didn’t understand anything: my pronunciation was very bad and when she spoke to me I didn’t understand anything either; and the confusion was bigger because no one there speaks Spanish. I went out with a little disillusion and without my card. I promised myself to learn English. After some months I tried to get the discounts card again so I went near to the woman in Customer Service. she was the same girl of the confusion. When she saw me I knew that she remember me but this time I spoke and understood better and I got my discounts card and when in my way out she said to me: “You learn to speak English”, I answered: “Yes, I try but I need more practice more. Then she only smiled. Now, I have the discounts when I buy at Stop Shop. Learning English has helped me to be more independent and I can do more things by myself. the winter this year was very cold, but houses and buildings have central heating. For this reason there are many activities indoors. In this winter my favorite place was and is the Library where every tuesdays I get to meet with my tutor, who teaches me more about the pronunciation and listen better the English. Also I learn about of the custom the American people. I never miss class and all the time I get to the library early. Everybody knows me in this place. I take my red folder with my homework ad my dictionary English-Spanish. One time I carried my computer so my tutor and I can see places of the United States and of my country Ecuador through the satelite, it was interesting. I like going to the library all the time and spend time in this place. |
